ELK GROVE - Foulkes Ranch Elementary School principal Mary Beth Kropp will be getting a government lesson during an extraordinary field trip. Congressman Ami Bera personally asked her to be his guest at the President's State of the Union Address in Washington, DC.
"I called him back and he said, 'I have something to ask you. Would you be my guest to the State of the Union address?' And what do you say to that? Are you serious?" Kropp said of her conversation with Bera.
Kropp said she's not sure why the freshman Congressman chose her to attend the President's speech, but she knew Congressman Bera when he was just Doctor Bera, and had his daughter attended Foulkes Ranch Elementary School from kindergarten to sixth grade.
"Ami and Janine were involved parents at our school," said Kropp.
"He was part of our PTO in a lot of leadership roles. We always kept in touch and education was always very important for him."
According to the Congressman's Office in an email sent to News10, he chose Kropp, because "she is a dedicated educator and hero to her students."
Kropp and her teachers even used her opportunity to help teach students about the role of America's presidents and how their principal will see the current one.
"I am going to be sitting in the gally upstairs. I'll walk over with the congressman. And I don't know all the details yet."
Kropp leaves Monday for Washington, D.C. She's grateful for not only the opportunity to hear the president speak in person, but for what that experience can do for her students.
"Hopefully, they'll all be watching the State of the Union address. It's a great educational experience to watch on TV."
Kropp plans to return to California on Wednesday afternoon.
