Yemen kidnappers free Swiss woman after Qatari mediation: agency

DOHA (Reuters) - A Swiss woman held hostage for nearly a year in Yemen has been freed by her kidnappers and flown to Doha following mediation by Qatar, the Qatari state news agency QNA reported late on Wednesday.

Armed tribesmen had kidnapped the teacher in the western Yemeni port city of Hudaida in March 2012 to press their government to free jailed relatives, a Yemeni Interior Ministry official told Reuters last year.

QNA said that an assistant to the Qatari foreign minister and the Swiss ambassador in Doha were at the airport to greet the woman, identified as Sylvia Abrahat, upon her arrival aboard a private plane from Yemen late on Wednesday.

"I thank the Qatari negotiating team, which had worked for months in silence, patience and wisdom until we reached this result," QNA quoted the Qatari official, Ali bin Fahd al-Hajeri, as saying, without giving further details.

Kidnappings of foreigners and Yemenis are common in the impoverished Arabian Peninsula state. Many are often freed unharmed.

A Finnish couple and an Austrian man are currently being held by suspected Islamist militants, having been sold by armed tribesmen who had kidnapped them in December last year, according to a senior Yemeni official.

The Austrian hostage had appeared in a video posted on YouTube earlier this month, saying he would be killed if ransom money was not paid to a Yemeni tribe within a week.

Pictured with what appeared to be an AK-47 assault rifle pointed at his head, Dominik Neubauer had said in a video posted on February 21 he would be killed if a Yemeni tribe did not get ransom money within a week.

His family responded on Wednesday with its own appeal in a YouTube video for his release as his hostage takers' deadline for a ransom payment neared.

Yemen last month suspended a military operation against al Qaeda-linked militants in al-Manaseh while tribal leaders tried to secure the release of the three hostages.

Rapid, point-of-care tests for syphilis: The future of diagnosis

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Syphilis is on the rise worldwide and there is an urgent need for reliable and rapid screening, particularly for people who live in areas where access to healthcare is limited. An international research team, led by scientists at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) in Montreal, has demonstrated that rapid and point-of-care tests (POC) for syphilis are as accurate as conventional laboratory tests. The findings, which were published in PLoS ONE, call for a major change in approach to syphilis testing and recommend replacing first line laboratory tests with POC tests globally, especially in resource-limited settings.

"There is a need to embrace rapid and POC tests for syphilis in global settings," argues Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, the study's senior and corresponding author, clinical researcher at the RI-MUHC and assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at McGill University. "This meta-analysis generates global evidence across all populations for POC tests for syphilis and is the first to use sophisticated analyses to explore the accuracy of POC tests compared to the best reference standards."

Currently, syphilis is screened using conventional laboratory-based tests that can take up to three weeks to deliver results. These tests require chemical agents, trained staff and a continuous supply of electricity, which are not readily available in some parts of the world. Rapid and POC tests can be performed on a simple finger stick sample one patient at a time, and the results communicated to the patient within 20 minutes, saving time and helping doctors order confirmatory tests and rapidly flagging patients who need treatment.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the rod-like bacterium Treponema pallidum. It is transmitted between sexual partners through direct contact with a Syphilis sore. It may also be transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy or at birth, resulting in congenital syphilis. "As well timely screening and treatment in first trimester is extremely important for pregnant women to prevent still births, pre-term births and mother-to-child transmission of syphilis," adds Yalda Jafari, the study's first author and a former master's student of Dr. Pant Pai.

As many as 50 million people worldwide are being treated for syphilis and about 12 million new cases are diagnosed every year. However, approximately 90% of those infected do not know it, and this is the driving force behind the worldwide epidemic. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) often refers to syphilis as the "great imitator," because many of its symptoms are similar to other diseases.

"Our study has major worldwide implications for populations living in rural areas with limited access to healthcare," says Dr. Pant Pai. "These tests offer the potential to expedite first line screening in settings where people have no access to a primary care physician or where laboratories take more than a week to deliver results."

(AP) ? A lawyer for Dominique Strauss-Kahn is claiming victory after a judge ruled that a publisher must add an insert to a book about the former International Monetary Fund chief's sexual relationship with the author.

Jean Veil said Wednesday the publisher will be fined ?50 ($65) for each copy of Marcela Iacub's "Beauty and the Beast" that fails to comply. The Nouvel Observateur newspaper, which printed an interview with Iacub and excerpts, also must put a legal notice on its front page, the French newspaper said. It said the insert text must say that the book violates Strauss-Kahn's privacy.

Strauss-Kahn's private life was thrown in the spotlight in 2011 when a New York hotel maid accused him of trying to rape her. Strauss-Kahn reached a legal settlement with her last year.

Cochlear implants aid adults with hearing loss: study

(Reuters) - Cochlear implants can improve speech and quality of life in adults with severe hearing loss - and two implants seem to work better than one, according to a U.S. analysis of past research.

The study, which appeared in JAMA Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, included 42 studies that compared hearing, speech and quality of life in eligible adults before and after they received a cochlear implant or compared having one versus two functioning implants.

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, about 17 percent of U.S. adults have some degree of hearing loss, and the chance of becoming hard of hearing increases with age. Only those with severe hearing loss or deafness, for whom hearing aids haven't work, are considered for cochlear implants.

"Unilateral cochlear implants provide improved hearing and significantly improve quality of life, and improvements in sound localization are noted for bilateral implantation," wrote researchers led by James Gaylor from Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

The studies used in the analysis used a range of tests over different time periods to measure the effects of implantation, so it was difficult to compare them directly, the researchers added. However, almost all the trials looking at the effect of a single cochlear implant showed that people's speech and quality of life improved after implantation.

"Cochlear implantation is just a hugely beneficial procedure for the people who need it. It's almost like magic," said Pamela Roehm, an otolaryngologist from the NYU Langone Medical Center, who wasn't involved in the study.

"Their hearing isn't completely normal, but for speech (and) understanding, it's so good."

Among studies comparing one versus two implants, the majority also found participants were better at communicating and localizing sound when they had a cochlear implant in each ear. It wasn't clear how much of an effect a second implant had on their quality of life, however.

Possible complications of implantation include infection or damage to the device. But Roehm said all things considered, it's a pretty minor procedure.

"It's surgery - you have to have general anesthesia - but as surgeries go, it's not very risky (and) you don't lose a lot of blood," she said. She and her colleagues have put implants into patients over 90 years old, with good results.

The new findings don't mean that deafness has a detrimental effect on quality of life, Gaylor told Reuters Health in an email. He added that for some in the deaf community, cochlear implants are still controversial.

"Our hope is that this paper will allow providers, payers and most importantly patients to ... make more informed decisions about cochlear implantation," Gaylor wrote. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/Zn0UoC

Judge blocks shareholder vote on Apple proposal

NEW YORK (AP) - A federal judge is blocking Apple from conducting a shareholder vote on a package of governance proposals, handing a victory to a rebel investor who is trying to persuade the company to share more of its cash with its investors.

U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan in New York ruled Friday that Apple Inc. was wrong to bundle four amendments to its corporate charter into one proposal for a vote at next Wednesday's annual meeting. Shareholders should get to vote on the amendments separately, he said. Although the ruling was preliminary, before both sides had a chance to fully make their case, Sullivan said Apple was likely to lose. He granted dissident investors a preliminary injunction against Apple pending a full trial.

Apple will comply with Sullivan's order and withdraw the issue from the agenda of next week's meeting, said Steve Dowling, a spokesman for the Cupertino, Calif., company. It had appeared on the shareholder voting list as proposal No. 2.

"We are disappointed with the court's ruling," Dowling said. "Proposal No. 2 is part of our efforts to further enhance corporate governance and serve our shareholders' best interests."

Greenlight Capital, a hedge fund run by Wall Street maverick David Einhorn, sued Apple over the proposal because it would remove the board's ability to issue preferred stock without shareholder authorization. Einhorn wants Apple to issue "iPrefs," preferred shares with a guaranteed dividend, as a way of committing the company to sharing its massive profits with shareholders.

Einhorn has been trying to rally Wall Street to vote against the Apple proposal as a way of showing their displeasure with the company's capital-allocation policies. Right now, Apple hands only a small amount of its profits to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks. The rest of the money goes in the bank, where Apple's cash hoard amounted to $137 billion at the end of last year. That amount grows by about $40 billion every year, much of it from selling trend-setting gadgets such as the iPad and the iPhone.

Investors almost universally want Apple to hand out at least some of that cash, but Einhorn hasn't gotten much support for his "iPrefs" idea or his "No on Proposal 2" campaign.

Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company's proposal puts more power in the hands of shareholders, making it difficult to understand why a shareholder would fight it. Calling Greenlight's campaign a waste of time, Cook said Apple wouldn't squander money by mailing letters to shareholders to persuade them to vote for the proposal.

The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the country's largest pension fund, had said it would vote for Apple's proposal, because it would have strengthened shareholder rights. Among other measures, it would let shareholders vote against directors.

Apple's stock fell 31 cents to $450.50 in extended trading after the ruling came out.

"This is a significant win for all Apple shareholders and for good corporate governance," Greenlight said in a statement. "We are pleased the court has recognized that Apple's proxy is not compliant with (federal securities) rules because it bundles different matters in Proposal 2. We look forward to Apple's evaluation of our iPref idea and we encourage fellow shareholders to urge Apple to unlock the significant value residing on its balance sheet."

A company with excess cash will usually reward shareholders by raising its dividend or issuing a one-time dividend. It could also buy back more shares. Einhorn believes none of these routes would yield as much shareholder value as the iPrefs, because their 4 percent annual dividend yield would make them attractive to investors that otherwise wouldn't look at Apple shares, such as pension funds and endowments.

Greenlight has been an Apple shareholder since 2010 and has 1.3 million shares worth about $580 million.

Music service Spotify hooks up with Ford in first vehicle foray

(Reuters) - Streaming music service Spotify has partnered with Ford Motor Co to allow its subscribers to listen to music in more than one million Ford vehicles in North America.

Owners of Ford models with SYNC AppLink can access Spotify's catalog of more than 20 million songs through voice activation using its smartphone app.

The deal, announced by both companies on Monday, is Spotify's first collaboration with an automaker.

Spotify is a free on-demand streaming music service that also offers a subscription package that allows listeners to hear music without interruptions from commercials and gain access to play lists and preferences from any device anytime.

Spotify says it has 20 million active users worldwide, with 25 percent of them paying for subscriptions.

Music services like Spotify and Pandora Media Inc

are striking partnerships with automakers to make their music available to drivers, especially as Internet access improves in vehicles.

Pandora is available in 75 vehicle models and has deals with automakers like General Motors Co , Ford, BMW and Chrysler Group LLC , allowing drivers to plug in their Pandora-enabled mobile devices and use car dashboards to control the service.

More than 1 million people have used Pandora's dashboard integration, it said.

Separately on Monday, GM said it was switching to AT&T Inc from Verizon Wireless to provide high-speed wireless service for its 2015 vehicle models.

Police: Hotel altercation sparked Vegas shooting

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Bullets were flying from a black Range Rover at a gray Maserati as the vehicles raced toward a red light on the Las Vegas Strip.

Beneath the neon lights, police say, the Maserati ran a red light at one of the Strip's busiest intersections and smashed into a taxi that exploded into flames early Thursday, killing the two people inside.

Three more cars and a utility truck also collided at the crossroads home to Bellagio, Caesars Palace and Bally's, injuring at least six more people as the Range Rover sped off in the pre-dawn darkness.

The Maserati driver was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The dramatic scene that more than one tourist compared to something out of a violent action movie set off a frantic search for the occupants of the Range Rover that continued into the night, and marked the latest violent episode on the Strip since the beginning of the year.

Two people were critically wounded in a shooting at a parking garage Feb. 6, and a tourist was stabbed Saturday in an elevator at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie told reporters several hours after Thursday's attack that it was sparked by an argument in the valet area of the nearby Aria hotel-casino, and that the violence at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road did not reflect the values of Las Vegas residents or visitors.

"What happened will not be tolerated," Gillespie said. He promised the shooters would be "found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

On the Strip ? closed and snarling traffic throughout the day until reopening late Thursday night ? the fiery rampage shocked tourists.

"We get stabbings, and gang violence," said Mark Thompson, who was visiting from Manchester, England, with his wife, "but this is like something out of a movie. Like 'Die Hard' or something."

Police said they were contacting authorities in three neighboring states about the Range Rover Sport with dark tinted windows and distinctive black custom rims and plates that fled the scene about 4:20 a.m. It had a car dealer's advertisement in place of a license plate.

In Southern California, the California Highway Patrol alerted officers in at least three counties to be on the lookout for the SUV.

Las Vegas police Sgt. John Sheahan said the Range Rover was last seen near the Venetian resort as it headed north from the shooting scene on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Witnesses also told police the SUV and Maserati had come from the nearby CityCenter area, the home of Aria, just south of the site of the attack.

"We have numerous witnesses to this," Sheahan said. "But what is the genesis of this? We don't know yet."

Predawn jogger Eric Lackey was on his way back to the New York-New York hotel when he snapped a cellphone photo of the blazing scene moments after the crash. Black smoke billowed from the flaming taxi, amid popping sounds from the fire.

Lackey, of Forest Hill, Md., said a security officer in a yellow shirt performed CPR on a person on the sidewalk while police officers canvassed a small crowd of perhaps 15 onlookers gathering at the scene.

"Police were asking if anyone was still in the vehicles and if they heard gunfire," Lackey told The Associated Press. "That's when I realized it wasn't just a regular accident."

Sheahan said police have video from traffic cameras at the intersection and were checking hotel surveillance systems. The video will not be made public, he said.

Police did not release the names of the people who were killed, citing the ongoing investigation.

The crumpled, gray Maserati, which had no license plate, came to rest several feet away from the incinerated taxi.

"The people I feel sorry for are the people in the taxi," said Elvina Joyce, a tourist from Regina, Saskatchewan. "Seconds made all the difference in the world for them. Wrong place, wrong time."

The area near the scene has been the site of high-profile violence in the past.

Rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1996 about a block away under similar circumstances, as assailants opened fire on his luxury sedan from a vehicle on Flamingo Road. The killing has never been solved.

Mozilla Thunderbird 17

If price or platform support are among your concerns when picking a desktop email client, then Mozilla Thunderbird (free) is hard to beat. Though it can't quite match all the whiz-bang features of Microsoft Outlook and that application's full support for Microsoft Exchange mail servers, it will suit a lot of users with a lot of different email scenarios?from those with custom server-based mail to webmail users. In fact, even if you have no email account at all, Thunderbird lets you create one using a choice of partner services, which (for a subscription fee) even let you create an email using your last name as the domain name, like firstname@lastname.com. That's sure to impress all your contacts!

Signup and Setup
Thunderbird is available for a lot more platforms than Outlook 2013, which only runs on Windows 7 and Windows 8. In addition to Windows 7 and 8, Thunderbird runs on the earlier Vista and XP flavors, as well as on Mac OS X and Linux. In addition, as with Mozilla's Firefox browser an Extended Support Release (ESR) is available for organizations that don't want automatic updates to upset their corporate software setups.

Though you can't set Thunderbird up with an Exchange server's full capabilities, you can hook it up using POP3 or IMAP servers. So if you use AOL Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, or even the new Outlook.com, for example, you'll be able to set up Thunderbird as your mail client software. Checking the Help pages for any of these services turns up the POP3 or IMAP and SMPT (for outgoing email) server addresses for setup. Using Thunderbird instead of the Web versions also means you won't have to look at ads. Yahoo Mail users, unfortunately, have to upgrade to the $19.99-a-year Mail Plus version to get server access.

Like Outlook 2013, the software can automatically determine your required server addresses and settings for the major mail providers. The new account wizard alternatively lets you configure new accounts manually, if you know the server addresses and settings. A more advanced option lets you send and receive digitally signed and encrypted messages, but you'll need valid certificates for this to work. Without those, you can still take advantage of SSL and TLS security.

To create a custom email account, click on the top choice in your folder list, Local Folders, and under Accounts, click Create a new account. This took me to two provider choices, gandi.net and hover.com. Search on your first and last name for these to come up with email matches; Hover actually could create michael@michaelmuchmore.com for me for $20 a year.

If you're switching to Thunderbird from Outlook, you can import your contact list. It's a simple matter of opening the Address Book, and choosing Tools | Import.? In the same step, you'll be able to import your account settings and mail folders.

Interface
Like every email client, you'll see the panel of accounts and folders down the left, the inbox and with an optional email preview pane below or even in the latest layout favored by Outlook, with the preview to the right (from Options | Layout). But you can't get the couple lines preview inside the inbox entries as you can in Outlook. All the panels are completely resizable. You can hide or display the typical menu items, File, Edit, and so on, but you'll probably use the button bar below that most often, for starting a new email, replying, and refreshing the inbox, among other things. Just as in Firefox, you can choose which buttons you want showing and where?thankfully, because the default choices weren't what I was accustomed to. That is, I put the Write (aka Compose) button at top left, replacing Thunderbird's default of Get Mail.

As in Firefox, tabs are the preeminent interface hallmark of Thunderbird. I'm a real fan of tabs in email, which I appreciate the presence of in Yahoo's webmail interface. It's handy to have a search page, an email you're composing, and your inbox all available at the same time from tabs. As with Outlook 2013, you get an Unread button to show only new emails in the inbox.

The application does support conversation view, showing a column of markers indicating which emails are part of conversations. Clicking on the marker expands the conversation, but Outlook makes conversations much clearer, with a triangular arrow indicating them and indentation when you expand them by clicking on the arrow.

You also get one of Outlook's most useful features?the card-like notifications that pop up at the bottom of the screen when a new email arrives. It does this from its system tray icon, but unlike with Outlook, you can't delete or flag the incoming emails right on the notification card. One thing you don't get out of the "box" is automated vacation responses, but an add-on is available to add this capability.

Most mail services have their own spam filters, but Thunderbird, like Outlook, give you a local tool for eliminating unwanted emails. With its "adaptive junk mail controls," you train Thunderbird to recognize mail you don't want. Just check the icon in the Junk column next to any email or click the Junk button in the message preview pane to designate it as such. When you turn this feature on, the program marks suspected junk, but you can and should tell it if it's marked good mail, to improve detection. I found that this mechanism did a good job of detecting worthless emails, but Outlook's similar tool offered more control, with options for several levels of blocking, such as "only the most obvious junk" and using "safe lists only."

Composing Email
When composing an email, you get all the formatting options you'd expect in any messaging software?the full choice of fonts, sizes, and colors for your text. But you can also choose plain text, even forcing that mode for domains you specify.

As with Outlook, I could be composing multiple emails in different windows at once. This is possible in some webmail clients, like Gmail, but less obvious and natural. Thunderbird saves your drafts automatically every 5 minutes by default; you can make this more or less frequent to taste.

Another convenience addressed by mail services like Outlook.com is large attachments. Thunderbird is in on this as well, with its Filelink feature. This kicks in whenever you try to attach a multi-megabyte file to an email. It uses file-hosting services Box, Ubuntu One and YouSendIt to accommodate the outsize files. You can specify the size limit that will trip your file attachment being uploaded to the service you set up with your credentials.

Flu Vaccine Barely Effective for U.S. Seniors

The good news about the 2012-13 influenza season in the United States is that for the fourth week in a row, health care providers reported that they are seeing fewer patients who have influenza-like illnesses, according to the today's report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Information that is less comforting is the determination that this year's seasonal flu vaccination offered little protection to people age 65 years and older, especially to one strain of influenza, H3N2.

Statistical Influenza Updates for Week Ending February 16, 2013

Every region in the nation reported fewer new cases of influenza than in the previous week. Nevada, New Jersey and Vermont reported high levels of influenza activity while the rest of the country reported minimal to moderate levels of the illness.

Despite the lower numbers of newly reported cases for the week, the mortality rate for influenza spiked to its highest level of the season, in what is considered to be epidemic proportions, even higher than that in 2008.

Pediatric deaths attributed for some of those cases: 14 children's deaths were reported for the week ending Feb. 16, bringing the total number of reported pediatric deaths due to the flu to 78 so far in this 2012-13 season. In a CDC graph showing the number of pediatric deaths due to the flu since the 2009-10 flu season, this flu season has the second lowest number of children's deaths due to the illness among the four flu seasons depicted.

People Age 65 Years and Older Hardest Hit by this Season's Flu

The CDC issued a report on Thursday explaining the flu vaccine's effectiveness in the 2012-13 flu season. The vaccine's effectiveness in preventing influenza in those age 65 years and older was reported to be a dismal 9 percent and a 56 percent effectiveness rate in children and adults younger than age 65 years.

The H3N2 influenza strain proved to be the most resistant to this years vaccine, not only in those age 65 years and older, but in their younger counterparts as well.

The CDC report explained that people age 65 years and older traditionally account for 65 percent of hospitalizations due to the flu and 90 percent of flu-related deaths are in this segment of the population. Not only is the vaccine's effectiveness known to be less in this age group than among younger people, but this population segment has an overall less efficient immune system and often the health of the members of this age group is compromised by chronic health conditions, causing them to be more susceptible to the complications of influenza.

Should People Age 65 Years and Older Still Get the Flu Vaccine?

The CDC stressed the importance of people age 65 years and older becoming vaccinated against the flu each season for a number of reasons. In some flu seasons, the flu vaccines have protected seniors against the flu strains very well; this particular season isn't representative of the overall picture, the public health agency explained. Even though some of the seniors who were vaccinated became ill, the vaccine may have protected them against more severe illness or flu complications. People in this age group are at high risk for developing severe flu symptoms, complications and even death. The vaccine decreases those risks.

YC-Backed Padlet Brings Drag-And-Drop To Collaborative Web Site Creation

padlet_hi_resWordpress, Blogspot and Tumblr have done a great job of making website creation accessible to anyone, but the novice can still be a bit overwhelmed by the back-end, especially when these platforms are built specifically to be as complex as they are simple, to expand the potential demographic. But a YC-backed company called Padlet (formerly Wallwisher) is launching into public availability, and its intuitive drag-and-drop interface bests even the top platforms when it comes to quickly and easily building a website. What's more, Padlet works a lot like Google Docs in that multiple users can modify and add to the page in real-time, forming a truly collaborative place to work and create.

Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan)

The launch of Nvidia's new GeForce GTX Titan graphics card has lit a fire underneath multiple boutique computer manufacturers. Falcon Northwest has built a new version of its Mach V desktop tower?the Mach V (Triple Titan)?to take advantage of the Titan's capabilities, with support for up to three of the new graphics cards and a six-core Intel Core i7 3970X CPU overclocked to 4.7GHz. The system's price tag as configured was $7,394. Yes, you read that right. The three graphics cards account for about $3000 of the eye-popping figure; this much power doesn't come cheap. The system's performance blew away the competition for the most part, setting a new standing for PC gaming. Thus, the Mach V (Triple Titan) takes the Editors' Choice for high-end gaming rigs.

Design and Features
The Mach V uses the same vertical chassis design as the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K) ($5289 4.5); both cases orient video cards and components upwards to take advantage of the fact that hot air naturally rises. From the outside, the chassis design is simple, even understated, but the hardware inside the box is some of the most powerful that money can buy. There's 32GB of DDR3-1866 RAM, the aforementioned Intel Core i7-3970X, and a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD, backed up by a 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green hard drive. The entire system is powered by a 1200W PSU; optical storage comes courtesy of a 16x Asus DVD-RW drive.

The disadvantage to this triple-GPU configuration is that the GPUs consume every available slot; there's literally no room for any additional hardware. Falcon Northwest makes up for the lack of free PCI-Express ports with a whopping nine USB 2.0 ports and six USB 3.0 ports. Two of the latter are mounted at the top of the case for convenient access while working.

The vertical design presents two other challenges. First, a desk that's designed to exhaust hot air at the back may end up trapping that air if the system exhausts at the top. Second, there's the cabling issue. If you don't have many external drives or peripherals, the Mach V presents a very clean, crisp profile. Add three monitors' worth of cables, a few external drives, and a keyboard + mouse, and the top of the system looks like a rat's nest.

The trade-off is that cooling performance is typically better in a vertical case?and with three GPUs and a 4.7GHz overclocked CPU, the Mach V needs to balance cooling performance and noise. It does so quite well. The next-generation GPU Boost technology built into the Titan family keeps each GPU's temperature pegged at 80C. Customers can override this manually if they wish, but the system automatically adjusts frequencies to ensure that even a three-GPU system runs no risk of overheating.

Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan)

Performance
The three Titan graphics cards are the showcase of the system and its strongest point. The Mach V (Triple Titan) sweeps even the Maingear F131 Super Stock (GTX Titan) in our 3D benchmark tests. Its 3DMark 11 Extreme score of 12,505 is 18% faster than the previous record-holder ? the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Intel Core i7-3770K), which was equipped with a pair of dual-GPU GTX 690s (four GPUs in total). In Aliens vs. Predator at 1,920-by-1,080 with 4x anti-aliasing (AA) and 4x anisotropic filtering (AF) turned on, the Mach V (Triple Titan) turned in 222 frames per second (fps) compared with the dual-Titan-equipped Maingear F131's 182fps. Performance in version 3.0 of Unigine's Heaven benchmark test at 1,920-by-1080 with 4x AA / AF was 198fps, compared to 155fps for the Maingear F131.

In other areas, the Maingear F131 and Mach V (Triple Titan) came in neck and neck. Both systems completed a Handbrake decode in 23 seconds. The Maingear F131 led in PCMark 7 (6,523 vs. 6,241 for the Mach V) and in Photoshop CS6 (2 minutes, 35 seconds to apply a dozen filters, vs. the Mach V's time of 2:41). The Mach V (Triple Titan) outperformed Maingear F131 in Cinebench, where the hexa-core 3970 got to stretch its legs. The multithreaded Cinebench R11.5 score for the Mach V (Triple Titan) was 13.62. Only the Origin Genesis (Core i7-3930K), with its 4.9GHz CPU, was faster.

Those performance figures provide an accurate model of how the Falcon-Northwest compares to other gaming systems. What they don't explain is how Falcon and its boutique competitors have leveraged the new cards to create better gaming experiences. We had the opportunity to test the Mach V in a 5,760-by-1,080 configuration across three 27-inch displays. A standard 1,920-by-1,080 display contains two megapixels? 5,760-by-1080 more than triples that, to 6.2MP. For comparison, 2,560-by-1,600 is 4 MP.

Yes, three GTX Titan GPUs pushing nearly 200fps in Heaven is impressive. What's more impressive yet is seeing the Mach V (Triple Titan) maintain 90fps in the same benchmark test when running across three displays at once. It's not a capability that's limited to synthetic benchmark tests?while multi-monitor gaming is still not standard, many recent titles like Shogun 2, Serious Sam BFE, World of Warcraft, and Batman: Arkham City all support it.

With three GTX Titan GPUs, the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan) is capable of fielding game experiences that other configurations don't offer. Serious Sam BFE at 5,760-by-1,080 with 4x super-sampled AA, 16x AF, and all GPU and CPU options set to maximum, for example, still maintains a consistent 75fps.

The three-monitor experience isn't perfect?the view on the side panels is often distorted and, in some games, magnifies the landscape and enemies to appear closer than they are. Despite these flaws, multi-monitor gaming support is growing, and the immersion in these games is superior to single-panel play. Game for a few hours across three monitors, and you'll find that dropping back to one is jarring.

That said, what's also jarring is the Mach V (Triple Titan)'s price tag. At $999 each, there's no such thing as a cheap Titan GPU, but gamers who are interested without having quite that much scratch to spare should consider a single GPU configuration built around one of Falcon's lower-cost alternatives like the Tiki or FragBox.

If you've got the funds, this is an excellent system. It's a configuration that can handle multi-monitor gaming, 3D gaming, or both without breaking a sweat. Given the strength of the underlying hardware, this Mach V could be the center of a gaming platform for years to come. Buyers who prefer to buy a high-end system and use it for a number of years rather than upgrading on a regular basis should give the Mach V (Triple Titan) serious consideration. Of course, if you want to use this to replace the high-end gaming rig you bought last year because that system was the "fastest," that's also your prerogative. Regardless, with its record-breaking performance, triple-monitor capability, and smart power-saving functionality, the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Triple Titan) earns our Editors' Choice for high-end gaming desktops.

Fujitsu smartphones venture outside Japan, with elderly Europeans in mind

Fujitsu is known for many things outside its native Japan, but not for its smartphones. To a small degree, this is now about to change ? in June, the company will launch an Android device for senior citizens, the Stylistic S01, on the Orange network in France. The device fits into a longstanding range that, in Japan, is named Raku-Raku.

The S01 runs Android ?Ice Cream Sandwich? 4.0 in a near-unrecognizable form, featuring a simplified layout with very large onscreen buttons. But it also has other features tailored to its target audience, such as what Orange describes as ?a unique screen technology? that essentially forces users to press icons harder in order to make them work ? the idea here is to help those who aren?t used to touchscreens to avoid accidentally launching things they don?t intend to launch.

The handset also adjusts the frequency range of its audio depending on the user?s age, and even slows down the speech of fast-talking callers. A personal security alarm is also included.

?As Fujitsu?s first extensive entry into the smartphone market outside Japan, we are delighted that Orange ? a company that holds a strong position in the European market ? will be offering our phone, which features Fujitsu-exclusive human-centric technologies,? Fujitsu corporate SVP Nobuo Otani said in a statement. ?We are committed to the success of this partnership as we strive to expand our smartphone business overseas, while advancing the promotion of Japanese technology worldwide.?

It?s worth noting that Fujitsu is not the only mobile phone maker to target senior citizens: Sweden?s Doro has built an entire business around that market, although its handsets are much simpler. Doro also has an application pack for making Android tablets more senior-friendly, and a similar approach has been taken in the smartphone realm by carriers such as Sprint.

In some ways, the application pack idea could serve as a transitional solution for senior citizens who find the standard smartphone interface a bit difficult to handle. If Microsoft?s Windows Phone styling becomes an influencer and UI designs become more generally big-button, there will be less of a need for such things in the future.

But more fundamental technological solutions, such as those Fujitsu is displaying in the Raku-Raku/Stylistic range, will always find an audience. And let?s face it, with an ageing population in much of the developed world, there?s a growing market to address here. Looking at things that way, it?s actually quite surprising how few players are focusing on the accessibility angle today.

Baseball: Clemens not worried about HOF vote

by The Associated Press Associated Press

Roger Clemens (The Associated Press)

Roger Clemens (The Associated Press)

slideshow KISSIMMEE, Fla. ? Roger Clemens said little publicly in the immediate aftermath of the Hall of Fame vote.

Over a month later, he?s willing to share his thoughts ? but the 354-game winner is not about to start a lobbying campaign.

?I?m not going to lose any sleep over it,? Clemens said. ?If those guys feel I deserve to be there, then I deserve to be there. If they feel I don?t, then that?s OK too.?

Clemens was at spring training Monday as a special instructor for the Houston Astros, and he spoke for a bit with the team?s pitchers about his mental approach to the game. Later, he watched some of the Astros throw live batting practice.

The 50-year-old Clemens seemed relaxed after a turbulent year. Clemens was acquitted in 2012 on charges he obstructed and lied to Congress in denying he used performance-enhancing drugs to extend his career. Last month, Clemens fell short of the necessary votes to make the Hall of Fame. Superlative stats weren?t enough to offset suspicions of PED use.

?I?ve had a great time when I?ve gone to Cooperstown,? Clemens said. ?I know a lot of people that work over there, too. If you?re around my groups of people, and the same thing when I go to the cities I?ve played in, the people have been nothing but great down on the streets to me.?

When Clemens met with reporters Monday, he began by handing out a written statement about the death of country star Mindy McCready, who made headlines in April 2008 when she claimed a longtime relationship with Clemens. Published reports at the time said she met the pitcher at a Florida karaoke bar when she was 15 and he was 28 and married. Clemens has denied the relationship.

Authorities said McCready died Sunday at her home in Heber Springs, Ark., of an apparent suicide.

?Yes, that is sad news,? Clemens? statement said. ?I had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life. The few times that I had met her and her manager/agent they were extremely nice.?

The Astros are moving to the American League this year after losing 213 games in two seasons. Clemens said if he were a player, he?d be excited because of all the job openings available on the roster.

He met with pitchers for about a half-hour before Monday?s workout.

?I tried to fire them up and tell them that we?re not just a newcomer to the league,? Clemens said. ?Hopefully we got the attention of a few of them.?

New manager Bo Porter was happy to have Clemens around.

?He had a good powwow with all the pitchers and catchers this morning,? Porter said. ?Like I told those guys, when you?re able to receive that type of tutelage and advice from someone who?s been through the battles, understands what it takes, he?s done it at a high level, it?s an asset.?

Left-hander Dallas Keuchel, who made 16 starts for the Astros as a rookie last year, is among many Houston pitchers still trying to prove himself. He said he?d met Clemens before ? he played in the minor leagues with Clemens? son.

When Clemens showed up at camp, Keuchel was ready to listen.

?A 350-game winner? I?m all ears,? Keuchel said. ?He talked about knowing your own game and what you?re capable of doing in the game, and you don?t need a pitching coach to come out. You?re a big leaguer for a reason. You?re there because you can throw the ball where you want to, and just because you make a bad pitch doesn?t mean you can?t make an adjustment the next pitch.?

Clemens says spring training has changed a lot since he was beginning his big league career. Players now arrive a bit more ready to push themselves.

?I watched some of the guys turning the ball loose yesterday, and I worry that they?re coming out of the gate to impress people pretty hard, and you can get tendinitis pretty easy,? Clemens said. ?But I know I did that when I was 21.?

Another difference Clemens noticed? It seems like fewer players are smokers now.

That led to a brief discussion between Clemens and reporters about fitness and nutrition in baseball ? and a comment from Clemens that at least tangentially referenced the sport?s drug testing program.

?You guys can go to GNC and take stuff, and we can?t ? to keep your health or muscle, or whatever you want to do. You?ve just got to be careful with it, because they can change the ingredients in it. You have to be aware of it,? Clemens said. ?I know you guys write about it, but there?s a scroll from here to the field over there of names you can?t even spell, that we can?t ? you?ve just got to be careful.?

NOTES: Porter said RHP Bud Norris will be away from camp for a bit following the death of his grandmother. He?s expected to leave Tuesday and be back Thursday. Norris is slated to pitch Sunday against the New York Mets.

iOS 6.1.2 Out for iPhone and iPad To Fix MS Exchange Bug

applelogo.pngAnother week, another Apple iOS update, this time to fix issues for enterprise users having trouble with Exchange and calendar issues.

Enterprise Panic Fixed

Many enterprises were sending out advisories to their BYOD or workforce iPhone users last week, hinting at some of the troubles that can be had with these devices and their infrastructure. Messages along the lines of this were common.?

"WARNING:?A single Apple device that uses calendaring could disable or interfere with mail services for all of our users. Users must not use their iPhone or iPad to accept, decline or manage their meeting invites until further notice."

That should be fixed now by the general release of a small (11MB or so) update for iOS, bringing it to 6.1.2 that, Apple says, fixes an Exchange calendar bug that could result in increased network activity and reduced battery life.?

Access Bug Fixed

It also fixes the lock-screen bypass bug that was widely reported last week as well, which showed a complicated but usable way to access an iPhone user's information.

ios612.jpg

?The bug fix earlier in the month, solved 3G connectivity issues for some users. With the increasing complexity of these devices and their software it looks like patch releases rather than feature-laden updates are the order of the day now.?

I Love You, Man: Gates Lashes Himself to Ballmer Over Microsoft's Mobile "Mistake" (Video)

url

In a wide-ranging interview with Charlie Rose on ?CBS This Morning,? Microsoft Chairman and co-founder Bill Gates made a little news ? or a lot of it, if you are a reader of internal tea leaves at the software giant ? in noting that the company?s early mobile strategy was ?clearly a mistake.?

But, perhaps more interestingly, when asked about the meh performance of Steve Ballmer, who replaced Gates as CEO some years ago, the typically non-diplomatic tech legend declined to throw his longtime confident over the side.

Instead, he strapped himself to Ballmer, in an orgy of ?he-and-I,? band-of-brothers statements that clearly linked the duo, even though Rose?s question was specifically about how Ballmer was doing.

?He and I are two of the most self-critical people you can imagine,? said Gates, noting a lot of ?amazing things? such as Surface and Xbox in the Ballmer regime. ?Is it enough? No, he and I are not satisfied that in terms of breakthrough things that we?re doing everything possible.?

Gates did note the obvious in addressing the slowness of Microsoft in the mobile market over the last several years, which has allowed rivals like Apple and Google to dominate the key sector.

?There?s a lot of things like cellphones where we didn?t get out in the lead early,? said Gates. ?We didn?t miss cellphones, but the way that we went about it didn?t allow us to get the leadership.?

No, it did not, but Gates is not blaming Ballmer for it, it seems.

Nursing chain agrees to outside monitoring again: OC Watchdog ...

Staffing levels and the quality of care at five Orange County nursing facilities will be routinely examined by an independent monitor as part of a settlement announced Friday by the state Attorney General's Office.

The facilities include Alta Care Center in Garden Grove, Anaheim Terrace Care Center in Anaheim, Carehouse Healthcare Center in Santa Ana, Fountain Care Center in Orange and St. Elizabeth Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Fullerton.

Each facility is operated by Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc., and had been part of an elder abuse investigation by the state Department of Justice. Statewide, the company operates 20 facilities with 2,360 beds.

The Attorney General had accused Skilled Healthcare of providing inadequate patient care. Between 2008 and 2012, the office noted in Friday's announcement, public health officials found 209 deficiencies at Skilled Healthcare's facilities and issued 76 citations.

Prosecutors said the nursing chain had failed to meet minimum staffing levels and prevent even basic medical complications. State inspectors had found cases of malnutrition, dehydration and over-medication.

As part of the settlement announced Friday, the company agreed to pay for additional supervision of its facilities for the next two years. An independent monitor will conduct surprise visits and send regular reports to the Attorney General.

Skilled Healthcare agreed to pay for the monitoring, estimated by the Attorney General's Office to cost $350,000 a year, but did not acknowledge any wrongdoing.

In a statement, Attorney General Kamala Harris described the case as part of an increased focus on elder abuse. She created special units to examine Medi-Cal fraud and neglect at California's nursing homes.

"This is a case about neglect and abuse of California's elders by a facility that was supposed to protect and care for them," Harris said. "Family and friends should have peace of mind that their loved ones are being well cared for when they are in a nursing home setting."

Skilled Healthcare's legal troubles stretch back to 2006. That year, patients and relatives filed a class-action lawsuit arguing that the nursing chain had violated California's minimum staffing rules and provided poor care.

A jury awarded the plaintiffs $670 million in damages in 2010, but the company later reduced the amount to $50 million through a settlement. Part of that settlement required almost the same kind of monitoring as the new settlement with the Attorney General's Office.

Roland Rapp, Skilled Healthcare's general counsel, said the company completed the previous monitoring with no issues and was happy to resume them to resolve a "gun to our head" from the state Attorney General's Office.

"Our record of compliance of those (reports) ... were essentially perfect," he said. "The auditor gave us a glowing report at the end of 18 months, such that the judge in that case ended the injunction early."

Rapp said the company has improved record keeping so it is easier to monitor and document that minimum standards are being met. Before the lawsuit, he acknowledged, records hadn't been up to par.

But Rapp took issue with Harris' statements Friday. The announcement cited the number of violations between 2008 and 2012, suggesting the company had a history of elder abuse.

However, the settlement itself didn't resolve widespread allegations against the company. The Attorney General's Office had charged it with one misdemeanor count of elder abuse.

"There's really nothing in there about any of the things she's talking about," Rapp said. "It's about the one facility in 2008. She's expanding it to 2012."

Skilled Healthcare has since transferred the facility, Eureka Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in northern California, to another provider, Rapp said.
