Palestinians say 9 dead from swine flu outbreak

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? A Palestinian health official says an outbreak swine flu has killed nine people.

Deputy Health Minister Asad Ramlawi also said Monday more than 225 people have been infected by the H1N1 influenza strain, known as swine flu. He said more than 25,000 vaccinations have been administered this year to prevent it. The West Bank has 2.5 million residents.

The West Bank has been struck by swine flu before. Dozens died in the Palestinian territories during the 2009 worldwide pandemic.

The first outbreak was discovered in Mexico in March 2009. Thousands died around the world, causing a global panic. The World Health Organization declared swine flu the first global flu pandemic in 40 years.

H1N1 is now considered a seasonal flu and included in the standard annual flu vaccine.

China court orders Apple to pay in rights dispute

A Chinese court has ordered Apple to pay 1.03 million yuan (US$165,000) to eight Chinese writers and two companies who say unlicensed copies of their work were distributed through Apple's online store.

The Beijing No 2 Intermediate People's Court ruled Thursday that Apple violated the writers' copyrights by allowing applications containing their work to be distributed through its App Store, according to an official who answered the phone at the court and said he was the judge in the case. He refused to give his name, as is common among Chinese officials.

The award was less than the 12 million yuan ($1.9 million) sought by the authors. The case grouped together eight lawsuits filed by them and their publishers.

An Apple spokeswoman, Carolyn Wu, said the company's managers "take copyright infringement complaints very seriously". She declined to say whether the company would appeal.

Unlicensed copying of books, music, software and other products is widespread in China despite repeated government promises to stamp out violations.

Apple's agreement with application developers requires them to confirm they have obtained rights to material distributed through the company's App Store.

"We're always updating our service to better assist content owners in protecting their rights," Wu said.

The Chinese writers said they saw applications containing unlicensed versions of their books last year.

In November, a court ordered Apple to pay 520,000 yuan ($84,000) to the Encyclopedia of China Publishing House for copyright infringement in a separate case. Apple is appealing, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

In the latest case, the Beijing court awarded 605,000 yuan ($97,500) to one company and 21,500 yuan ($3,450) to the second, according to the court official.

The biggest individual judgment went to writer Han Ailian, who was awarded 186,000 yuan ($30,000).

Rant/complainfest about Adobe and Google and bundling..

Rant/complainfest about Adobe and Google and bundling..

I'm really glad that I don't update Flash unless YouTube or something tells me I can't see their content unless I update.

Adobe Community: Bundling Google Chrome and Toolbar???

And yeah, I know this is somewhat old news, but as time goes on, the less and less I trust Google.

It seems that Adobe has made a deal with Google to automatically install Google Chrome unless you uncheck a box if you happen to update Flash player. Granted, I would probably notice this box, but many others don't. This move potentially installed Chrome on millions of computers. Sure, for people who usually used Internet Explorer, this might have been a good thing as IE is just utter crap, but that doesn't excuse this kind of intrusion, especially the way Google installs stuff--the program is located deep and hidden in your profile instead of the regular place it should be in Program Files, they do NOTHING the standard way, they set ALL of their own standards.

And I found this out after I read about how Adobe has dropped flash support for all browsers in Linux except Chrome which will update automatically through the "wonderful" GoogleUpdater that pretty much acts like a piece of spyware (that's as hard to get rid of) with no way to control when and how it does things.

I just wonder how much more nasty it's going to get, whether Adobe may eventually drop support on other platforms for Flash except on Chrome. I also wonder what software will eventually come out that flat out doesn't give you a choice, it would just install Chrome automatically...

Body of India rape victim cremated in New Delhi

Adnan Abidi / Reuters

Mourners arrive at a cremation ground to attend the funeral of a rape victim after her body arrived from Singapore, in New Delhi on Sunday.

By Reuters

NEW DELHI - The body of a woman whose gang rape provoked protests and rare national debate about violence against women in India arrived back in New Delhi early on Sunday and was quickly cremated at a private ceremony.?

The unidentified 23-year-old medical student died from her injuries on Saturday, prompting promises of action from a government that has struggled to respond to public outrage.?

She had suffered brain injuries and massive internal injuries in the attack on Dec. 16, and died in hospital in Singapore where she had been taken for treatment.?

She and a male friend had been returning home from a movie theater, media reports say, when six men on a bus beat them with metal rods and repeatedly raped the woman. The friend survived.?

India charges six suspects with murder after victim of horrific gang rape dies

Six suspects were charged with murder after her death.?

A Reuters correspondent saw family members who had been with her in Singapore take her body from the airport to their Delhi home in an ambulance with a police escort.?

Ruling party leader Sonia Gandhi was seen arriving at the airport when the plane landed and Prime Minister Mannmohan Singh's convoy was also there, the witness said.?

A 23-year-old medical student who was raped and attacked on a city bus in New Delhi has died, resulting in charges against six men. Even before she died, her savage attack triggered mass protests about treatment of women. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

The body was then taken to a crematorium and cremated. Media were kept away but a Reuters witness saw the woman's family and government officials, including junior home minister, R.P.N. Singh, coming out of the crematorium.?

Security in the capital remained tight after authorities, worried about the reaction to the news of her death, had on Saturday deployed thousands of policemen and closed some roads and metro stations.

Protesters still gathered, in New Delhi and other cities, to keep the pressure on Singh's government to get tougher on crime against women. Last weekend, protesters fought pitched battles with police.?

On Sunday, lines of policemen in riot gear and armed with heavy wooden sticks stood in front of metal barricades closing off roads in New Delhi. Morning traffic was light.?

Government caught off-guard
The outcry over the attack caught the government off-guard. It took a week for Singh to make a statement, infuriating many protesters.?

Issues such as rape, dowry-related deaths and female infanticide rarely enter mainstream political discourse in India.?

The 23-year-old who was gang-raped in New Delhi and thrown from a bus has died from her injuries in Singapore, where she was being treated. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.

Analysts say the death of the woman dubbed "Amanat," an Urdu word meaning "treasure," by some Indian media could change that, although it is too early to say whether the protesters calling for government action to better safeguard women can sustain their momentum through to national elections due in 2014.?

India gang-rape victim dies in hospital; case focused attention on sexual violence

Newspapers raised doubts about the commitment of both male politicians and the police to protecting women.?

"Would the Indian political system and class have been so indifferent to the problem of sexual violence if half or even one-third of all legislators were women?" the Hindu newspaper asked.?

The Indian Express acknowledged the police force was understaffed and poorly paid, but there was more to it than that.?

"It is geared towards dominating citizens rather than working for them, not to mention being open to influential interests," the newspaper said. "It reflects the misogyny around us, rather than actively fighting for the rights of citizens who happen to be female."?

PhotoBlog: Police try to temper outrage over gang rape

Most sex crimes in India go unreported, many offenders go unpunished, and the wheels of justice turn slowly, according to social activists, who say that successive governments have done little to ensure the safety of women.?

Commentators and sociologists say the rape has tapped into a deep well of frustration many Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social issues.?

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in India rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.?

Simple Tips For Increasing Your Self Improvement - Empower Network

TIP! It is normal to find unhealthy foods tempting. Stress is as bad for your body as a piece of cake, so remember that life is too short to sweat the small stuff.

It?s of utmost importance to work on your self improvement. You may want to develop a healthier lifestyle or less damaging spending habits. Always strive to improve yourself in every aspect of your life. There is always something you can improve on, keep this in mind as you strive to become a better person in life. Establishing good habits will make your life more enjoyable and beneficial!

TIP! Look for different sources of encouragement, like books. In certain cases, this could take the form of religious volumes, in others, it could be a collection of historical quotations.

To be the best you can be means hoping others share in your good fortune. Often the negative thoughts projected on others can boomerang and come back onto you. Look at other people and wish for them, the very best. If you keep your emotional self positive, you won?t be knocked down by all those negative feelings.

TIP! Keep looking for new challenges you are interested in. These new challenges can create many possibilities.

Stress is what often brings down happiness. Stress can take both a physical and an emotional toll on your body. Take care of the stress you have in your mind by thinking clearly. Find some spare time during the day to be by yourself and to clear out your mind by relaxing. This time can help you improve your overall life.

TIP! Employers usually don?t care where you went to college. They only care that you got your degree and are capable of doing the work.

Don?t be disorganized anywhere in your life. When you are organized you have much more of a feeling of being in control, and this will help you gain self confidence. The stress of living in disorganization will also disappear. Organizing your environment can be a calming and centralizing influence.

TIP! You should always look at the person you are on the outside rather than the person on the outside. It really does not matter what expensive clothing you wear, or if you look like someone from a magazine shoot.

Fuel your faith with love. Faith and love are intertwined. You should constantly look for ways to give meaning to your faith. You can make your faith meaningful by doing positive things for peers and loving them.

TIP! One thing to avoid when making a personal development plan is goals that are too broad. Create specific goals.

Learn how to listen to others. This is particularly true when you are talking about self-development. Many people talk to themselves, and this is something you should be doing as well. In addition, listen to yourself very carefully. Hearing your own thoughts and feelings when you express them will lead to a better understanding of what you need to improve your life.

TIP! Learn how to get through trying situations without letting your emotions get the best of you. Come up with methods that will help relieve your stress and remain calm when problems pop up.

Not only is getting organized an achievement in itself, but it will help you to meet other goals faster. If you break big goals down into little sub-goals, you will gain confidence as you achieve the sub-goals. There are several ways to do this, including jotting notes in a day planner or using a complete notebook for monitoring your goals.

TIP! Remember that you cannot please everybody, and that you should be your own top priority. Do not become a self-centered person, but keep in mind that no one else will help you be a happier person than yourself.

Take a step to cure your anxiety by going with a friend to a movie. Movies are social settings, but they do not require conversation or uncomfortable socialization. This also allows you to be around a large group of people in a stress-free environment.

TIP! Stop stressing yourself needlessly. Do not over-react to setbacks: this will only cause you more stress.

Read several highly-rated books on personal development. The best self improvement books can give you new ideas and advice that could change your life forever. Be sure that you pick out a book that has been favorably reviewed because a lot of the times, these type of books can be poorly written.

TIP! You may experience excess stress when you overreact to difficult situations. Acknowledge and manage your stress by carefully analyzing your circumstances.

Exercising is not only a way to lose weight. There are many other benefits from regular exercise. It helps stimulate your body so that you can create chemicals that make you calmer and happier.

TIP! One new trait that is being researched and is very important to develop is known as sexual capitol. This doesn?t mean you need to use your sexuality as a means of getting the results you desire.

You should always want a higher level of self restraint when working hard for personal development. Make sure that you develop self control skills. Overcome your basic urges, such as gluttony, lust or sloth. With proper self control you can stop vices from negatively impacting your body and mind.

TIP! Take every available opportunity to improve yourself. Choose not to live in fear of your decisions even if you do not have all of the information you desire.

Unless you take care of yourself, you won?t be able to care for anyone else. Whether you?re just starting your personal development plan or are well down the road and regardless of whether you?re succeeding or failing, you have to set aside time for yourself to rest, relax, and regroup.

TIP! Wisdom and modesty are two integral components of life. Use your daily situations to learn about what you can and cannot change about the things in your life.

The best way to go about self improvement is to concentrate your improvement efforts on one trait at a time. Even though there may be many things that you need to improve on, by working on only one, you increase your chance of being successful. Adopting new habits one at a time will make it easier to maintain them.

TIP! Have a notebook or a smartphone app to jot down notes wherever you go. Keep a small notepad and pen with you at all times.

Begin today setting some money aside regularly for emergencies. Each time an unexpected expense crops up, it seems we wind up adding it to our credit cards. Even a few dollars per week can quickly add up to a nice savings. This will be able to get you through a short term crisis like unemployment or a large unexpected health care bill.

TIP! Finding ways to live a healthier life will also help you in your personal development endeavors. Good health simply makes your whole life go better.

Don?t be a shopaholic like those people on Hoarders. Instead, find a hobby to take up your time that doesn?t cost you much money. This way, you won?t be running up high bills and filling your house with things you don?t need.

TIP! See what habits successful people have in common, and adopt them. Start with a couple habits and then practice them until they?re permanent parts of your life.

Put your core principles into practice. Each person has a set of beliefs that determine who they are. If you have this rooted in a good foundation, your self-esteem will benefit greatly due to this. This will also promote consistency in your life and actions, which is a trait almost everyone finds admirable.

TIP! Taking a few small risks may just be where you should start on your path towards happiness. Many people do not like to take chances because they don?t want to feel like a failure, so they would rather stay cemented in their comfort zone, which often leads to an unfulfilled life.

It is vital to watch your health when developing yourself to your full potential. Maintaining positive motivation is just as important as the diet and workout plan that you instill. When you are healthy, you feel your best and therefore can be more effective in all the other areas of your life.

TIP! You may reap great benefits by conferring with a therapist or a minister. Not only have they been trained to deal in personal growth, their experience in these issues is what makes them a good choice to speak with.

It may become discouraging to begin developing better personal habits and lifestyles, but once you start noticing your life developing towards a better future, you will never want to stop. You can always develop better ways to do things and it?s important to always try hard towards any self improvement goals you have.

?

My story?. Guidance..

In 2006, like many I was a hopeless person trying to find my way in this business world. Back then I just left University to pursue this world we called ?Business?. It was a strange place to be for a newbie. I didn?t know where to go and didn?t know what to do. Still I took up the challenge to embark this journey to be an Entrepreneur.

You don?t need to know everything. You just need a heart to start it and a strong will to continue this bumpy ride.

The first business that I took on was to sell this special Clay Soap made in Malaysia. It was made to serve a very niche market. With only $20 in my pocket, I embarked on it by purchasing a few pieces and then manage to borrow from my dad to buy a whole carton of the Clay Soap. Surprising the product caught on with the relatives with the help of my Mum. She?s this telemarketeer who would called up every single Aunt to let them know of this new product.

In a few months I took the product to the stores, built a website with just $150 for the domain and web hosting. ?And from there that $20 turn to hundreds per month offline. The product was selling very well offline, however the website I built did not garner much attention. The only way I know how to market back then was to email to a group of my friends and contacts in NUS.

To expand the business I need to know more people, so I signed up for an entrepreneurship?workshop at SMU which led ?to my Mentor known as Abang Abu. He then introduced me to a Malaysian Internet Millionaire ? Dr Irfan Khairi which opened the way for me to learn more about Online Marketing.

The lessons covered in the workshop by Dr Irfan Khairi was very simple to create wealth online. You just need a Page with all the information about your product or Service. Drive Traffic via the various ways & Monitor them. Sales will eventually be made and from there you have to implement after sales tactics to gain more business.

After that workshop, I implemented what was taught and there you go my online sales increased by 50% in 2 months. A simple strategy yet it works like magic! Till today I am receiving calls and orders for this product.

As you can see I am not a genius who figured out everything. I had to attend seminars and workshops to learn the Right Way of Marketing Offline & Online. I needed the right Guidance.

Similarly my mentor Dr Irfan also said the same thing. He was lost when he started his online business back then in University. In his first year, he managed to get only 2 clients. Only after he attended a seminar to learn the right way of Promoting, Choosing the Right Products, Setting up Systems then he started to have more customers.

If you want to get the real stuff done, find someone who can guide you.

Now you may think that I am making up all the stories above. Now let me show you some of our recent statistics from one of my online businesses and some of my track records.

Proofs

Now what I have shown above is the recent sales statistics for one of my online businesses. Yes the truth is I have more than one website that are making money for me but let me tell you that if you can?t do for one, let?s not talk about doing it on multiple websites.

Now for Offline Biz, I have also helped to fill up several events from 40 pax classrooms to 600 pax.

NIagaDalamAutoPandu

In 2010, I was fortunate to help strategize an event which draws more than 500 people. I was one of the Speakers at this Untung Internet Seminar.

In 2011, I did it again..

In this round almost 300 people turn up for this event.

Whatever I have shown you above are real cases that happened. Now I must share with you that it is not impossible to have done what I have done. But you need to do the do!

All that reveal in this workshop because when you understand the basics and the fundamentals, its easy to do any other things.

The Workshop?.

And here I will like to share with you the upcoming workshop on Basic Internet Business.

Who is this for?

EPA, LG Electronics USA Collaborate on Broad Environmental ...

WASHINGTON, December 27, 2012 /3BL Media/? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and LG Electronics USA (LG) have entered into an agreement to collaborate on a number of environmentally beneficial goals.

Under the agreement signed by EPA and LG (a 2012 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year), the company has pledged to participate in a broad array of EPA environmental stewardship programs with technical assistance and support from the EPA. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the EPA and LG, states that the company will pursue a series of initiatives, including:

  • Enhancing its leadership in the ENERGY STAR? program by joining the ENERGY STAR Commercial Building Program,
  • Expanding its role in the EPA Green Power Partnership Program by increasing its purchase of green power,
  • Joining the EPA WasteWise Program to enhance waste prevention programs, recycling practices and sustainable purchasing at all U.S. facilities. ?
  • Incorporating EPA WaterSense technologies in its facilities to conserve water,
  • Supporting EPA Sustainable Materials Management programs for electronics and food waste recycling challenges,
  • Utilizing the EPA GreenScapes program to support environmentally beneficial landscaping practices that can reduce waste, conserve water and cut energy usage,
  • Adopting the EPA Clean Construction USA Program to help reduce emissions from internal combustion engines used in facility construction and operation,
  • Implementing environmental best practices in energy management systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
  • Achieving LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The MOU ? the first such agreement signed by a leading consumer electronics and appliance manufacturer ? also covers product stewardship, environmentally-preferred purchasing, green infrastructure, green transportation and environmental education initiatives in which EPA and LG will collaborate.

LG Electronics USA?s environmental sustainability and energy conservation efforts are exemplified by a major new project under way in New Jersey. LG is planning to construct a 493,167-square- foot, eight-story state-of-art office building on a 27-acre lot in Englewood Cliffs to serve as its new North American headquarters. The proposed design is highly responsive to the environment and includes a number of environmentally enhanced elements that are designed to achieve at least a Gold LEED certification.

The company?s focus on environmental and energy management extends beyond the new headquarters building. More than 15 office buildings in the LG portfolio are being reviewed for operating and energy efficiency enhancements as well. Supporting the key elements of this MOU, the company has committed to an industry-leading 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for its U.S. operations by 2020, compared with a 2007 baseline. ??

Already a proud member of the EPA?s GreenPower Partnership (GPP), LG is purchasing 100 percent green energy for its current New Jersey headquarters and intends to increase green power in its energy portfolio. ?For example, LG will construct and operate an 85,000-quare-foot array of LG own photovoltaic solar at its new headquarters facility, which will generate an annual amount of 1,047 MWH. ?Under the MOU, the company is in the process of reviewing green power options for other U.S operations.?

The programs covered by the MOU supplement LG?s a broad array of sustainability initiatives? including energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions in manufacturing and the supply chain; consumer education aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of product use; producer responsibility through consumer take back/recycling programs; reduction in the use of hazardous substances; deployment and promotion of renewable energy technologies; and development of innovative green life cycle product designs.

LG Electronics USA will submit an annual status report to EPA. EPA will use this report to determine the environmental benefits associated with the company?s ?green? activities and provide feedback on ways to further improve its environmental performance.

Brian Schatz Senate: Hawaii's Lieutenant Governor Tapped To Replace Late Sen. Daniel Inouye

Hawaii's Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz has been chosen to replace the late Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii).

Hawaii Democrats picked U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, Schatz and Department of Land and Natural Resources Deputy Director Esther Kiaaina as final nominees for the open U.S. Senate seat. Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced Schatz as Inouye's replacement Wednesday evening.

After fighting respiratory complications, Inouye passed away December 17 at the age of 88. The day Inouye died, he sent a letter to Abercrombie asking him to appoint Hanabusa to his seat.

Abercrombie said that he wanted Hanabusa to remain on the House Armed Services Committee because of her close relationship with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Politico's Manu Raju reports Inouye's office is "very disappointed" the late senator's choice of successor was not honored by Abercrombie.

After the announcement, Schatz noted he would run for Senate in 2014 with hopes of serving the last 2 years of Inouye's term. He also announced he would seek the Senate seat for a full term in 2016.

The AP reports:

HONOLULU ? Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz of Hawaii was appointed Wednesday to succeed the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced the appointment after receiving a list of three candidates from the state Democratic Party earlier in the day. The other candidates were U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Inouye died Dec. 17 of respiratory complications at the age of 88. He had sent Abercrombie a letter that day, saying he would like Hanabusa, 61, to succeed him.

"Sen. Inouye conveyed his final wish to Gov. Abercrombie. While we are very disappointed that it was not honored, it was the governor's decision to make," Jennifer Sabas, Inouye's chief of staff, said in a statement. "We wish Brian Schatz the best of luck."

Schatz will serve until an election is held in 2014. Had Hanabusa been appointed, a special election would have been needed to fill her seat.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had urged Abercrombie to name Inouye's successor before the end of the year. Schatz could be sworn in as early as this week, which would make him Hawaii's senior senator heading into the new Congress, which begins Jan. 3.

Sen. Daniel Akaka is retiring at the end of this Congress, after 22 years in the Senate. Democratic Rep. Mazie Hirono was elected in November to succeed him.

Schatz, 40, is a former state representative and a former chairman of the state Democratic Party. He also was a leader of President Barack Obama's campaign in Hawaii in 2008.

In making his case before the party's central committee Wednesday, he said he understood the importance of seniority in the Senate and said that if he was appointed, he would strive to make serving in the Senate his life's work.

Speedy boson machine could bridge classic and quantum computing

8 hrs.

A new type of machine could rival quantum computers in exceeding the power of classical computers, researchers say.

Quantum computers?rely on the bizarre properties of atoms and the other construction blocks of the universe. The world is a fuzzy place at its very smallest levels ? in this realm where?quantum physics?dominates, things can seemingly exist in two places at once or spin in opposite directions at the same time.

The new computers rely on "boson" particles, and resemble quantum computers, which differ from traditional computers in important ways. Normal computers represent data as ones and zeroes, binary digits known as bits that are expressed by flicking switch-like transistors on or off. Quantum computers, however, use quantum bits, or qubits (pronouced "cue-bits"), that can be on and off at the same time, a state known as "superposition."

This allows the machines to carry out two calculations simultaneously. Quantum physics permits such behavior because it allows for particles that can exist in two places at once or spin in opposite directions at the same time.?[Experiment Demonstrates Possibility of Quantum Internet]

Flash interactive: How quantum computers work

In principle, quantum computers could solve certain problems much faster than can?classical computers, because the quantum machines could run through every possible combination at once. A quantum computer with 300 qubits could run more calculations in an instant than there are atoms in the universe.

However, keeping qubits in superposition is challenging, and the problem grows more difficult as more qubits are involved. As such, building quantum computers that are more powerful than classical computers has proven very difficult.

Now, though, two independent teams of scientists have built a novel kind of device known as a boson-sampling computer. Described as a bridge between classical and quantum computers, these machines also make use of the bizarre nature of quantum physics. Although boson-sampling computers theoretically offer less power than quantum computers are capable of producing, the machines should still, in principle, out-perform classical computers in certain problems.

In addition, a boson-sampling computer does not require qubits. As such, "it's technologically far simpler to create than building a full-scale quantum computer," said researcher Matthew Broome, a quantum physicist at the University of Queensland in Australia.

Boson-sampling computers are actually a specialized kind of quantum computer (which is known more formally as a universal quantum computer).

"The main difference between boson-sampling computers and universal quantum computers is that boson-sampling quantum computers can't solve a universal set of problems like universal quantum computers can," Broome said. "But they are still conjectured to be able to solve problems that would be massively intractable for classical computers. Boson sampling computers are an intermediate model of a quantum computer."

Boson-sampling computers are not based on qubits, but on particles called?bosons. "In our case, we use photons," said researcher Ian Walmsley, a quantum physicist at the University of Oxford in England. Photons are the packets of energy that make up light, and are one type of boson.

Gallery: What the heck is a boson?

Broome and Walmsley were in separate groups that each devised a boson-sampling computer, based off concepts first described by theoretical computer scientist Scott Aaronson at MIT. The computers involve multiple devices that can each generate single photons. The photons are inserted into a network where they can interact with one another. They emerge from outputs equipped with sensors to analyze the particles.

The task of calculating which outputs these photons will emerge from, an operation known as boson sampling, grows well beyond the capabilities of classical computers the more photons are involved. The new computers accurately resolved what paths the photons would take ? three photons with Broome and his colleagues' machine and four in Walmsley and his collaborators' device.

Since boson-sampling computing is in its infancy, it remains uncertain whether these computers can solve problems beyond boson sampling. Still, this research suggests that computers based on quantum physics could indeed tackle problems beyond the reach of classical computers.

Year in Science: Higgs boson takes the prize

Previously, there was nothing to say "that anything you can do on a quantum computer you can't do on a normal computer, which leaves in question the necessity for quantum computers," Broome said. "Now, with boson sampling, we're coming up with machines based on quantum physics that can attack problems strongly believed to be intractable for classical computers."

In the future, "it would be great to push these computers toward more photons to tackle problems that would be challenging to simulate on normal computers," study coauthor Walmsley added. Using about 20 to 30 photons would?be a problem?beyond the capabilities of classical computers.

Both research teams detailed their findings online Dec. 20 in the journal Science.

No Christmas Magic For Oz Retailers | Stuff.co.nz

There has been no Christmas miracle for Australia's embattled retail sector, with the traditional shopping season doing little to shift downbeat forecasts for the year ahead.

Retailers reported good, but not great, Christmas sales as thrifty consumers looked for bargains online and in shops.

"I think it's going to continue to be gloomy for at least the first half of the year," said Margy Osmond, chief executive of the body representing big retailers, the Australian National Retailers Association.

"I think we're going to see more impact in the discretionary spend areas from online.

"I hate to say it, but I think we're going to see some more reasonably high-profile failures."

She said sales growth in the Christmas period would "probably sit at around 4 per cent".

"While that sounds okay, it's not really, because decent growth is six per cent and we haven't seen that for a very long time," she said.

According to the association's yearly survey of shoppers in the lead-up to the Christmas rush, 59.4 per cent planned to pay with cash. This is up from 58.7 per cent last year.

"It all fits the mindset of a very conservative consumer - that they're not interested in a huge amount of debt," Osmond said.

Russell Zimmerman, executive director of the Australian Retailers Association, which represents smaller retailers, said solid trade during Boxing Day sales did not represent a reversal of the weak consumer confidence that had plagued Australian retailers this year.

"I think it's more about the fact that they've got an opportunity to get goods at very discounted prices and... I don't know that the confidence has returned yet," Zimmerman said.

"Someone said to me in the lead-in that they've had a good Christmas, but not a great Christmas. I think that sums it up. I think that's how we are going to go into next year, remembering that at some stage next year we are going to have an election, and elections always slow retail down."

Department store Myer reported record sales of gift cards this year and, Osmond said, booming sales of gift cards reflected the conservative mood of consumers.

"What a gift card is perceived as is the ultimate in value because, whatever you pay for it when you buy it, it will be worth more than that in post-Christmas sales," she said.

"So it completely fits the mindset that says cash, that says I'm a bit concerned about the world at large."

Many retailers used their online shops to move Boxing Day sales forward, with some starting to discount as early as Christmas Eve.

Osmond said retailers were reporting a "huge" Christmas online.

"I think what you're seeing now is that the biggest online operators in the country are what were the traditional bricks-and-mortar stores, who don't view that as a sufficient offering to their customers any more."

She said the change was driven by customer demand.

"That's why you've seen so much change in the last 12 months, and I think you'd be looking at significantly more investment in this over the next 12 months."

Linda Burgess, manager of Highpoint shopping centre in Maribyrnong, Victoria, said customer numbers indicated people still held out for in-store sales.

"It's that instant gratification that customers get on a day like [Boxing Day], which you can't get online," she said.

The National Australia Bank said it registered more than 3.8 million ATM, EFTPOS, debit and credit card transactions on Boxing Day, at a peak rate of about 100 a second. The spike is an increase from NAB transactions over the past year, which grew at a rate of 15 per cent.

But an NAB spokesman said the year-on-year growth could also be a reflection of the increasing use of cards over cash for shoppers.

Meanwhile, US holiday retail sales this year have grown at the weakest pace since 2008, when the country was in a deep recession.

In 2012, the shopping season was disrupted by bad weather and consumers' rising uncertainty about the economy.

A report that tracks spending on popular holiday goods, the MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, said that sales in the two months before Christmas increased 0.7 per cent, compared with last year.

Many analysts had expected holiday sales to grow 3 to 4 per cent.

In 2008, sales declined by between 2 per cent and 4 per cent as the financial crisis that crested that fall dragged the economy into recession.

A 4 per cent increase is considered a healthy season.

Shoppers were buffeted this year by a string of events that made them less likely to spend - superstorm Sandy and other bad weather, the distraction of the presidential election and grief about the massacre of schoolchildren in Newtown.

The numbers also show how Washington's current budget impasse is trickling down to Main Street and unsettling consumers.

Pyramids 3D

Pyramids 3D ($13.99) is a multimedia journey into some of the most renowned and magnificent structures of the ancient world, the Pyramids, Sphinx, and tombs at Giza, Egypt. With this beautifully designed app, users can read about early Egyptian history, examine 3D-rendered artifacts, and even take virtual journeys into the Pyramids and tombs while a narrator explains what they are seeing. This fun and informative app offers content that will be of interest to anyone from curious youngsters to budding Egyptologists to armchair explorers.

Exploration
When you first open the app, you are treated to a 3D aerial tour of the Great Pyramids, Sphinx tombs, lesser pyramids, and other structures on the Giza plateau. You come to rest, hovering high above the pyramids. By clicking on a pyramid or a tomb, you are transported to it and given the option to enter the structure. (You can also navigate to the various structures from a pull-down menu atop the screen.) When you do so, you are transported along corridors within the building, where you can visit various chambers. If you press Audio Intro, a voice will describe what you are seeing.? Moving your finger across your iPad?s touch screen will let you get a 360-degree view of the chamber or other location.

In the lower left corner of the screen are three buttons with icons: Places, Objects, and Book.

The Book section provides a good overview of Egyptian history from when the Nile valley was settled some 8,000 years ago through Greco-Roman times and including the more recent exploration and excavation of the tombs starting in the seventeenth century. It includes additional illustrations and artifacts, including basic cutaways of the pyramids as well as photos of the structures.

Experts
Anyone who?s watched specials on Egyptology in recent years will be familiar with archaeologist Zawi Hawass, secretary general of Egypt?s Supreme Council of Antiquities. Dr. Hawass wrote the text for this app, as well as selecting the 40 artifacts that appear in the Objects section. They were rendered in 3D by Sandro Vannini and his team, which also spent thousands of hours photographing Giza?s monuments.

Artifacts
The artifacts are largely statues, but also include an urn, a knife, and hieroglyph-covered palettes. There?s also the reconstruction of a boat?found near the Great Pyramid?that had been dismantled into more than 1,200 pieces of wood. It?s known as the Solar Boat, as it is believed to have been built to carry the deceased pharaoh Khufu on his afterlife journey through the sky with the sun god Ra. The centerpiece, though, is the exquisite 3D rendering of the golden funeral mask of King Tutankhamun.

Pyramids 3D shares the solid content and exquisite photography and production of another Touch Press ebook, the Editors? Choice app The Elements: A 3D Exploration (5 stars, $13.99). There are more in-depth books on Egyptology, but Pyramids 3D is a very good overview, and provides a fun and educational multimedia look at some of the grandest structures ever built.

Quail Park Villas debuts new model - KansasCity.com

After a two-year hiatus, construction has resumed in Quail Park Villas, a maintenance-provided community at 141st Street and Pflumm Road in Olathe, and a new model home will debut Dec. 27.

Quail Park Villas, developed by Tom French, is an enclave of just 30 homes. Tom French has been building homes in Johnson County for more than 30 years and is a pioneer in maintenance-provided communities. The new plans at Quail Park were developed to fill a need identified by visitors to other Tom French communities.?We discovered that many people who visited the twin villas in Holly Ridge in Overland Park were seeking a stand-alone villa and others who visited the luxury homes in Linden Place in Overland Park wanted a smaller stand-alone villa,? said Susan Hoskinson with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Kansas City Homes, who markets Tom French communities. ?To answer those needs, we developed the new plans for Quail Park Villas.?The new model is the Chestnut plan, listed at $315,000. It is a charming reverse 1 1/2-story plan with a finished walkout lower level. This home has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a finished recreation room. Expansive wood floors, decorative tile and oil-rubbed bronze fixtures are only some of the luxury finishes. ?This home has a very open design, which today?s buyers prefer,? Hoskinson said. ?The expansive great room and dining area are conducive to entertaining, and two of the bedrooms and bathrooms are on the main level.?She added that the Chestnut model has all of the upgraded finishes that potential buyers liked at Holly Ridge as well as some of the finishes found at Linden Place. Although the home is not yet completed, Hoskinson said potential buyers may call her at 913-484-2839 for a preview showing.?We already have a lot of interest in this home, so don?t hesitate to call,? she said, adding this has been her busiest year and she?s been in real estate since 1996.?With a very few exceptions, our homes have been selling before they are completed,? Hoskinson said. ?We can?t build homes in most of our communities fast enough to meet demand.?Another reason for interested buyers to hurry to view this new model is the scarcity of opportunities remaining in Quail Park Villas, where only seven home sites are available, including walkout, daylight and level sites. Home prices range from the $290,000s to the low $300,000s.The $225 monthly homeowners? fee at Quail Park Villas covers lawn maintenance and snow removal. Quail Park has an Olathe address but students attend schools in the Blue Valley district, including Liberty View Elementary, Pleasant Ridge Middle and Blue Valley West High schools. Other Tom French Homes communities include the Cottages at Cross Point Creek at 87th Street just west of Renner Road in Lenexa, Foxfield Court at Lone Elm Road and 116th Street in Olathe, Holly Ridge at 158th Street and Lowell Avenue in Overland Park and Linden Place on 124th Terrace east of Nall Avenue in Overland Park.

Jason Kander of Missouri to Become Youngest Statewide Official in America

Jason Kander barely won a spot in the state capital as Missouri's newest secretary of state. His victory marks a unique place in American politics. When Kander takes office in January, he will be the youngest statewide elected official in the United States. * The Army captain was one of 10 finalists for the 2010 Army Reserve Junior Officer of the Year award. Kander was elected as a state representative in 2008 and again in 2010.

* The incoming secretary of state was an Army intelligence officer in the reserves. He enlisted after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. His commanding officer touted Kander's "willingness to volunteer for dangerous duty," according to his campaign website.

* The Associated Press revealed it wasn't just Kander's election that was close. As of Dec. 1, the candidate had slightly more than $5,000 in his campaign account after the election.

Factories flex muscles post storm, inflation subdued

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Factory output posted its sharpest increase in nearly a year in November as auto production staged a rebound, while consumer prices slipped, offering cautious optimism for the struggling economic recovery.

Factories have bounced back after being held down by Superstorm Sandy, which struck the East Coast in late October.

Despite last month's rise, factory production remained below highs reached earlier this year. Analysts said this subdued recovery and tame price pressures provide ample scope for the Federal Reserve to stay on its ultra-easy monetary policy path.

"This is an economy that still has a lot of slack and upside potential," said Robert Dye, chief economist at Comerica in Dallas. "There is a lot of dry tinder out there, the Fed has added to that with monetary policy and we have to get past the fiscal cliff issues to see if the dry tinder catches fire."

The "fiscal cliff" refers to the $600 billion in deep government spending cuts and tax hikes that will hit the economy next year if the Obama administration and Congress fail to agree on a less drastic plan to reduce budget deficits.

Manufacturing output rose 1.1 percent in November, the biggest gain since December 2011 and a rebound from a 1.0 percent drop in the prior month, the Federal Reserve said. It said production was lifted by a surge in motor vehicle output.

Hurricane Sandy had weighed on overall industrial output in October, but the rebound in November was stronger than economists had expected. Output at the nation's factories, mines and utilities taken together also jumped 1.1 percent after slumping 0.7 percent in October. It was the biggest gain in almost two years.

Separately, financial information firm Markit said its preliminary gauge of U.S. factory activity in December rose to 54.2, its highest level since April, from 52.8 in November.

"Going forward, output will largely be determined by what type of resolution is reached on the fiscal cliff," said Brett Ryan, a U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank Securities in New York.

"If policymakers do not come up with a solution, the recovery in industrial production may prove to be fleeting."

BENIGN INFLATION ENVIRONMENT

In a third report, the U.S. Labor Department said its consumer price index dropped 0.3 percent in November, the first decline in six months, as gasoline prices fell sharply.

The so-called core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, edged up 0.1 percent after rising 0.2 percent in October. Although food prices rose 0.2 percent in a lagged response to the summer drought, price pressures remained tame.

"The inflationary backdrop remains very benign, providing the Fed with considerable breathing room to keep monetary policy accommodative," said Millan Mulraine, a senior economist at TD Securities in New York.

The central bank said on Wednesday it expected to hold interest rates near zero until the unemployment rate falls to at least 6.5 percent as long as inflation does not threaten to break above 2.5 percent.

U.S. stock prices ended lower on Friday as the data failed to dispel worry on Wall Street over the fiscal cliff. Prices for U.S. government debt rose as traders saw the inflation data supporting an easy Fed policy. The dollar fell from a near nine-month high against the yen and dropped for a fifth straight day against the euro.

GASOLINE COSTS DROP

In the 12 months through November, consumer prices increased 1.8 percent, the smallest gain since August and a slowdown from the 2.2 percent rise in the period through October. It has slowed from nearly 3 percent in January.

Last month, gasoline prices tumbled 7.4 percent, the largest drop since December 2008, after falling 0.6 percent in October.

The drop in gasoline prices eased some of the strain on household budgets. The Labor Department said inflation-adjusted average weekly earnings rose 0.5 percent last month, reversing October's 0.5 percent fall.

Away from gasoline, the cost of apparel fell for the first time in two months, while new motor vehicle prices saw their first rise since August. Auto prices could have been lifted by a spike in demand as people replace vehicles destroyed by Sandy.

Prices for used cars and trucks fell for a fifth straight month, while housing costs edged up.

In the 12 months through November, the core CPI increased 1.9 percent after rising 2.0 percent in October.

"The current disinflationary trend, and the fact that wage and upstream price pressures are almost non-existent, suggests that core inflation will probably remain below the Fed's target for most of 2013," said Jeremy Lawson, a senior economist at BNP Paribas in New York.

The Fed targets an inflation rate of 2.0 percent, but uses a separate gauge that tends to run a little lower than the CPI.
